What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care supports patients and families whose lives are affected by incurable illness such as cancer or motor neurone disease. A holistic approach to care helps patients and families to come to terms with the situation and to live out the time that remains as fully as possible. Palliative care is not just about effective pain management and symptom relief but also offers emotional, spiritual and practical support.

Palliative Care East

The Palliative Care East Centre, to be built in the grounds of the James Paget University Hospital, will provide a much-needed care base for patients and their families in the Great Yarmouth & Waveney area.

With professionals and volunteers working under the same roof, it will bring together first-class clinical care, complementary therapies, psychological and spiritual support, and practical advice on social care and financial matters.

Why is it Needed?

Most patients prefer to stay in the comfort of their own homes for as long as they can. But their needs can change rapidly towards the end of life. To help them avoid hospital admission they need a range of clinical and other services - a one-stop support centre.

With diagnostic facilities and specialist input from the James Paget University Hospital on the doorstep, the Centre will offer first-class clinical care involving palliative care doctors, Macmillan nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapy. Family support workers will be at hand to help with social care, financial shortfalls and benefits. Trained volunteers will be there for patients and their loved ones and listen to their feelings and concerns. Complementary therapy practitioners will offer acupuncture, reflexology and aromatherapy. And above all, these services will be provided in a calm and comforting environment, where the most important thing we have to offer is our time.

What can we do?

We intend under Carla’s Angels, to raise £30,000 for the Carla’s Garden which means we will have the garden named after Carla in loving memory and a marble pillar to explain her story so when patients of a similar situation wheel out to view the garden they can be touched by her story.
